Chapter 5
Maryann was in her room when Tommy came running inside. "Did you see me riding my horse, Ma?"
"Yes, I did, and you are an excellent rider. I'm very proud of you."
"So is Pa, and he let me rub him down and everything."
"When you have a horse, you have to take care of him."
"That's what Pa says, too."
"You need to go wash up and get ready for bed."
"Already?"
"Yes. I'm tired. I didn't take a nap. I bet once your head hits that pillow, you’ll fall fast asleep, too."
"Okay, Ma. You going to tuck me in?"
"I sure am. Yell at me when you are ready."
"I will."
Tommy had just run to his room when Kirk came in. Maryann smiled at him. "He is so proud of that horse."
Kirk chuckled. "I know. Guess what he named him?"
"I have no idea."
"Jingle Bells."
"What?" She stared at him like he was silly.
"Yep, Jingle Bells. He said because Christmas was coming and the horse was the best Christmas present he could get."
Maryann shook her head. "I don't know how the horse feels about that."
"I'm sure the horse will be answering to that name soon. Every time Tommy talked to him, he called him by that name."
She was about to answer him when Tommy yelled from the other room. "I got to go tuck him in and listen to him say his prayers."
"I'll go, too."
She led the way and saw Tommy already kneeling down at the edge of the bed. She knelt on one side of him and Kirk on the other.
"Thank you Lord for my ma and my new pa. Thanks for Jingle Bells, too. God bless us all. Amen."
"Amen," Maryann said, along with Kirk. She got to her feet as Tommy scrambled onto the bed. When he was settled, she pulled the covers up and kissed him on the cheek. "Goodnight. I love you."
"Love you, too, Ma, and you, too, Pa."
"Goodnight, Tommy. I love you, too."
Maryann watched Kirk lean down and kiss Tommy on the cheek. Tommy threw his arms around Kirk's neck and hugged him. "Go to sleep now." She turned and went back to their room. Kirk came inside and shut the door behind him.
"He's a good boy, Maryann. You did a fine job raising him."
"Thank you. He takes after his pa." She walked to the dressing table, sat down, let her hair down, and began brushing it out. When Kirk stepped over to her and took the brush out of her hands, she looked up at him.
"You have beautiful hair. I've never seen a woman with such long hair. I thought it was long when you had it wound around your head in braids, but not this long."
She let him brush her hair, loving the feeling of having someone else do it for her. "I've thought of cutting some of it off at times, but don't have the heart to."
"What were you talking to Dallas about?"
"That I expect him for breakfast and on his best behavior. Dorothy told me about his mother and what happened to her.
